MEETINGS

BRUNNER WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

The monthly meeting of the Brunner Women’s Institute was held on Thursday evening in Wallsend, Miss A. B. Smeaton presiding over a good attendance. Tho meeting opened with the first verse “Ode to Friendship.” The President read the motto. Enquiries were made about sick members, and two new members were welcomed by the President. Members were asked to donate gifts for competition prizes, Miss Newlands, Mrs. Anthony, Mrs. Pender, Mrs. Rogers and Mrs. Moore all volunteered. Discussion took place regarding the benevolent fund and it was decided that a shop day be held. Arrangements for a dance were held over until the May meeting. A suggestion regarding some community effort resulted in a Peggysquare quilt to be made, the squares to measure six inches. The secretary was requested to order badges for members. It was decided to award each person entering for a competition one point and two points to the winner, an aggregate prize to be awarded at the end of the year. Two members were appointed to visit sick members oi’ write to them if in hospital, Mrs. Pender and Miss Creagh being appointed for the month of May. Hostesses were appointed as follow: —May: Mrs. P. Moore, Miss Newlands, Mrs. Watson, Mrs. J. Dunn. June: Miss Creagh, Mrs. J. Rogers, Miss Richardson, Mrs. Anthony.

It was decided to hold .a debate in the near future.—Left over till next meeting to arrange the topic, etc. The President read the report of the Federation meeting held in Greymouth on April 12. —Adopted as satisfactory. The President read the “Aspira-

;ions” and asked all members requirng copies to hand in their names to :he secretary. A demonstration of

honey-combing and fancy stitches was given by Airs. J. Pender. She also offered to help members with new stitches and promised to demonstrate smocking at a future date. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Airs. Pender for the demonstration.

The result of the competitionarticle made from one yard of cretonne —was won by Airs. F. Smith—stocking bag, head of bird. The competition, answers the names of cars, was won by Mrs. Moore, Aliss Collins and Aliss Richardson, Aliss Collins winning the draw. After supper, the President made a small presentation to Airs. J. Hart on the occasion of her marriage. Airs. Hart suitably responded. The roll call —“uses of eggs” was well respond, ed to. The meeting closed with the second verse of the ode.
