HOKITIKA NOTES
[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] A special meeting of the Hokitika Harbour Board was held yesterday afternoon, to consider the question of repairing the transit shed, damaged by the' recent flood. The chairman (Mr. E. W. Heenan), stated he had asked Mr. D. Stevenson to inspect the building and give alternative estimates for: (1) repairing the old building, and (2) constructing a new shed half the size. For repairing the old building the cost is estimated at £lOO, and to construct a new, but smaller building, £lBO, The action of the chairman was approved, and it was resolved to ask Mr. Stevenson to carry out the repairs to the shed. It was resolved to forward a letter of thanks to Messrs. W. A. Smart and Co., for the use of their lorry in moving goods from the shed at the time of the flood; also to Messrs. Paterson. Michel and Co., for the use of their large store for storing the goods. At a meeting of the St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church Committee, held last evening, tenders for the erection of a new church were received, and that of Mr Gant, Christchurch, was accepted, the amount being £2400,
Mr. AV. Winchester, of Rolleston Street, Hokitika, will have charge of the Hokitika Savings Bank during the absence of Mr. and Mrs. W. Wilson in Europe. The w'ater supply was restored to the town yesterday. The workmen, under Air. F. Chesterman, had a very trying time. Men camped in the vicinity of the upper reaches of the Arahura River during the recent flood, have come into town, and report a most terrifying time. The whole night, huge slips were coming down the mountain sides, the roaring of the water and boulders being terrific. A glance at the hills in the vicinity of Tuhua will give an indication of what was done. The hills are scarred with huge slips for a radius of about .10 miles. It is evident that something more than a heavy rainfall was responsible for such work.
