BARRYTOWN NOTES

[our own correspondent.] A pleasant social and dance was held in the Settlers’ Hall on Saturday evening, to do honour to two,of the most popular members of the. younger set, Miss Eileen Ryall and Mr. H. G. Weaver, the occasion being that .of their approaching marriage. During the evening, Mr. T. N. Mouat spoke eulogistically of the young couple, and on behalf of the residents df the Barrytown and Punakaiki districts, asked them to accept as a token of the high esteem in which they were held, a handsome chiming clock and a set of carvers. . Mr. A? T. Richards spoke in glowing terms of the good work done by Miss Ryall since the committee’s inauguration, and asked her to accept on behalf of the members of the Hall and Social Committee a crystal salad bowl' and silver servers. Mrs. F. E. Roud, President of the Women’s Institute, took the opportunity to present Miss Ryall with a rose bowl and a kettle as a small token of the esteem in which sh’e was held by all the members-of the Institute, of which she was one of the staunchest members. Then followed the singing of. “They are Jolly Good Fellows.” Mr. Weaver, on rising to reply on behalf of his future wife and himself, was greeted with loud applause. In a brief speech he thanked everyone for their wonderful gifts and remarks and for the kindly interest taken, and assured them that the useful presents they had received for their future home would help them to recollect many happy , times spent among all the Barrytown people. The week-end weather conditions proved a 'decided change from the exceptionally warm spell, and the days have been showery, while the noticeable drop in the temperature made fires welcome again. The strong easterly gale that sprung up on Sunday afternoon, continued blowing all day yesterday, and some loss will be sustained by many whose fruit trees, especially the apples, were badly shaken by the wind. At the Golden Sands sluicing claim, the work on the front leads, as well as the small areas acquired during the year, has now been practically completed, and the shifting of the plant to the back leads has commenced. Sluicing finally to clean up the old area is now taking place, and another wash-up resulting therefrom may be expected. It is estimated that the shifting of the plant will entail an interruption in sluicing for a period of from six to eight weeks. The Old Boys’ Association were favoured with an ideal day for their picnic here, and all enjoyed the outing immensely. In the afternoon the Barrytown cricket eleven played a friendly match against the Old Boys and the match resulted in an easy win for the local team. Miss M.
