MEETINGS TO COME

February 27—Opunake. February 28 —Waiapu.

Copyist tor Coast: That useful sprinter, Copyist, has been secured by a Greymouth sportsman, and will arrive to-morrow night. He will be a valuable addition to the West Coast contingent.

Surprise for Americans: Azucar, winner of the Santa Anita Handicap at Los Angeles last week, is a six-year-old by Milesius (by Roi Her cd e), from Clarice - , by' Picton from Clarilaw by Persimmon. He raced on six occasions in England in 1931, and was then sent to the United States.

Improving With Age: Prince Paladin, who won another race in South Australia on Saturday, was bred at the Kinloch Stud, and sold as a yearling at Christchurch in November 1925, to Mr J. A. Taylor, of Wellington, for 375 guineas. He won his first race for Mr Taylor at Blenheim in May 1927, Oratrix, by the way, also winning her first race at that meeting. Prince Paladin only had one second placing in six starts as a three-year-old, and was then sold to go to South Australia, where he has had mixed fortune. He is now ten years old, but -appears to be winning more races than in any previous season’. Lovelorn, dam of Prince Paladin, was acquired in 1927, by Mrs N. S. Perry and Mr H. G. Cogan, and they bred Manetho from her, but she failed to further produce.

A Quick Return: Synagogue’s dead-heat in the Caulfield Futurity Stakes on Saturday would considerably help towards the return of the outlay made by Mr J. A. Phillips to secure him. Shortly after the sale was made, Mr Phillips stated that he did not have to . pay the 2500 guineas mentioned as the price involved, and that he got him for much less. This was probably so, but in the first place, his‘breeder and previous owner, Mr W. S. Clark, received 2500 guineas for him, an'd any less figure accepted for him in his sale to Mr Phillips, was ho concern of his. Synagogue must have been given a good test-out after his arrival in Melbourne, as he was accorded a late entry (February 5) for the Futurity Stakes at an outlay of £3O, this being a big increase on the nomination fees If made at the original closing time. In addition it would cost another £5O to start in Saturday’s race. Half share of the first and second money, and the prize for Uie nominator of the winner, would amount to £l2OO. TE AROHA CONCLUDES.
