FORGER’S BIG HAUL

£lOOO FROM NATIONAL BANK

[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

NAPIER, February 26.

One thousand pounds in notes comprised the coup of a man, believed to bo a stranger to Napier, who presented a forged cheque for that amount at the National Bank of New Zealand. Napier, on Tuesday, February 19. The cheque is believed to have been cashed on a private account held at the bank, and the fact that jt was a forgery was discovered on Saturday last. Placed in the hands of the police immediately upon discovery, the cheque has been the subject of extensive inquiries, which are being continued without cessation. A factor which probably makes the task of the police more difficult is that the notes used by all the trading banks in New Zealand have been the same since the establishment of the Reserve Bank in August last. There is. therefore, no chance of tracing the notes which were handed over, by the designation upon the face, of the bank from which they were issued. Further details connected with the affair are not available. at the present time. The manager of the bank, Mr L. Clark, stated this morning that the head office at Wellington had been supplied with details of the forgery, and that investigations were being handled by the police. Beyond that, he was unable to give details of the circumstances in which the cheque was cashed, or to state the serial numbers of the notes which were handed I over in payment of the cheque. It is understood, however that the list of these serial numbers is not yet complete, and that those engaged on the inquiries irre now checking these up, with a view to obtaining a complete list.
