WANGANELLA HELD UP

DISPUTE WITH STEWARDS.

SYDNEY, February 25.

The Wanganella, which was to have sailed for Auckland to-night, carrying air mails, has been held up. owing to a dispute with the stewards. All the. passengers had boarded the vessel at sailing time, but after an announcement by the company that the departure was postponed, they were obliged to disembark. The trouble occurred as the result of. a dismissal of a steward. The others declined to sail with the ship unless he was reinstated. It is understood that no settlement was reached to-night. CAUSE OF STOPPAGE. SYDNEY, February 26. The sailing of the Wanganella has been postponed indefinitely. The dispute arose when the Wanganelia was between Melbourne and Sydney. A steward and stewardess, who, according to the Sydney manager, did not give satisfactoiy service, were given notice. Following a meeting of the stewards, they gave twenty-four hours’ notice, to become effective if the steward, who was the union delegate on the vessel, and the stewardess were not reinstated.

The dispute will be discussed by a meeting of the Stewards’ Union today.

CARGO STEAMER DELAYED.

MELBOURNE, February 26.

Tho departure of the cargo steamer James Cook, for New Zealand, has been postponed indefinitely, in consequence of the decision of the Seamen’s Union to refuse to man the ship, unless additional trimmers are called for.
