DETECTIVE’S RUSE
FEIGNS DRUNKENNESS. SYDNEY, February 1. Detective Dewesbury arrested two men in a lane off George-street last night,i after he had kept them under observation for some, time by pretending to be a drunken reveller. Detectives Brown, Dewesbury, and Frost were patrolling in plainclothes in a motor car. They noticed two men in the lane, but did not stop for fear of being observed. When the car had gone about 100 yards along the street, Detective Dewesbury alighted. The car drove on and Dewesbury. pretending to be drunk, staggered back along the street, singing boisterously as he went. The two suspects disregarded him. Then, it is alleged, the two men Dewesbury was watching attacked a passer-by. seizing a parcel, punching him, and apparently attempting to go through his pockets. Dewesbu’ry, abandoning hili pretence, drew his revolver and bailed up the suspects. They were standing against a when Detectives Brown and K Frost returned. Two men were subsequently taken to George-street North police station, and charged with assault with intent to mb.
