BOOKMAKER TRICKED

£lB4 PAID TO WRONG MAN. SYDNEY; January 30. A well-known bookmaker, who operates on an extensive scale both in Melbourne and Sydney was defrauded of £lB4 by a cool trickster yesterday. The bookmaker was settling with clients after the Randwick meeting, when a man approached him and stated that he had come to collect the winnings of a successful bettor. He mentioned the name of the client and the exact sum of money he said ho had been asked to collect. The bookmaker not suspecting that the man was an impostor, paid out £lB4 without asking for credentials. He was astounded shortly afterwards when the man who made the successful bet arrived and demanded settlement. . This man denied that he asked anyone to collect the money for him. The matter was reported to the police and investigations were begun.
