THE NEW GERMANY
ROTHERMERE’S HEROICS [by CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] LONDON, December 29. “Germany is on her feet again.” writes Lord Rothermere, in his paper “The Daily Mail,” after a week’s visit to Munich. “The Germans, through Herr Hitler, have found a new, potent faith, which has wrought a miracle in removing mountains of difficulties that have been barring the way to a recovery. Germany has set. a new pace to human endeavour. She is a new Sparta, led by a Spartan, whose daily fare is as simple as that of the humblest workers. His example has encouraged young Germans to improve themselves 30 per cent, in physique. The zest for work in Germany is already high above the standard. When a whole generation has grown up under the Nazis, the Germans will be almost supermen. Moreover, under Herr Hitler’s magnetism, the nation has reached a self-confidence, and progress suggesting a gigantic powerhouse No limits may be set to the developments with which they may surprise the world. Germany to-day is the strongest power in Europe.” The “Manchester Guardian” prints a letter from a workman in Germany, who is employed on the motor roads. He says: “The workers receive scanty rations and small wages. There is a lot of nigger driving. There are many serious, and even fatal accidents. There is frequent open mutiny in the camps, owing to the scarcity of food. This shows up the glorious times to which Hitler has led us!”
’ STATE AND CHURCH. LONDON. December 29. “The Times’s” Berlin correspondent says: The Catholics in Germany are greatly interested in an article written by Signor Mussolini, in which ho scornfully rejects the .idea of founding a State religion, or of subordinating Catholicism to the State. The references in the article are so pointed towards Germany that it is believed that the article, with the Pope’s Christmas message, referring to paganism, is designed indirectly to warn the German leaders against interfering with Ihe Church.
