‘SHAKESPEARE AND BILL & ME’
SIR FRANK BENSON’S STORY. Sir Frank. Benson (the actor) at the dinner of the Warwickshire Folk in London, at Gatti’s Restaurant, recently, recalled an occasion when a soldier asked him: “What was that you recited to us, sir?” Sir Frank told him it was Shakespeare —Henry V. at the Battle of Agincourt. “Lor’ love me,” exclaimed the man, “that’s just me and Bill at the Battle of Wipers.” “I am not sure,” added Sir Frank, “that in the words of that man we have not the definition of immortality. Just Shakespeare and me and Bill. That means every one of us at our particular ‘Battle of Wipers’; in our moments of success, in our moments of despair, triumph, joy and hopes.”
