SWIMMING
OPENING CARNIVAL. The Greymouth and Cobden Swimming Clubs combined, conducted the first swimming carnival of the season in the Municipal Baths, last evening. There was a good attendance, the takings being in the vicinity of £l2, and a varied programme, including several novelty events, provided an interesting evening for patrons.-■ The straight swimming events drew good entries, and though there were no new performers of note, interesting racing with close finishes, was the order. P. Ryan was the outstanding performer winning the open 50 yards off five seconds, and the open dive. Miss L. Staines, formerly of Hokitika captured the ladies’ event. Results: —

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS FREMANTLE. December 18. The liner Maloja, arrived to-day, from London, her passengers including Jean Taris, the world’s leading free style swimmer, and Emile Pousard, the diving champion of Europe. Both are competing in all of the Australian States, except in Queensland.
