notes on the racing. [special to “star.”] WELLINGTON, December 15. The Haeremai High-weight Handicap resulted in a close finish and a surprise victory for The Khedive. Round Score and Blue Boy moved up rounding the far turn, and Round qrore was first into the straight from Blue Boy, King Thomond, Black Man and The Khedive. Blue Boy assumed command passing the distance, and append to be the winner until The Khedive put in an appearance on the outside, the latter getting up In the laqf stride to snatch victory on the nost Revision finished strongly from a rear position into third place,

with Hounslow, Black Man and Round £>core next.

Sea Fox was sent out favourite for the Sandringham Handicap, but was badly favoured over the early stages, and was at the tail of the field rounding the home turn, eventually being well back at the post. The winner, Tunneller, was responsible for a most impressive effort. He was always in a forward position near the rails, but, nevertheless, his chance when entering the straight did not look very hopeful. At this stage Palm had a clear advantage from Cawbeen, Sunee.l Limulus, Wasteland, Orby’s Last and Cyclonic, but all these were well bunched and when the distance post was reached Tunneller was within striking distance of Palm, Cawbeen and Limulus. An exciting, struggle ensued. Limulus had Palm in trouble fifty yards from the post, but Tunneller then made a solid run between them, and the three crossed the line in a bunch, the verdict going to Tunneller by half a neck from Limulus, who beat Palm by a head. Wasteland was half a length away in fourth place.

Silver Coat and Haut Monde disputed favouritism for the Balmoral Stakes, but while the former drifted out after leading to the false rail, Haut Monde recorded a comfortable win. Silver Coat, -was closely followed entering upon the course proper by Haut Monde, Severe, Round Up, Penelope and Bun Fight, but as soon as serious business commenced Haut Monde had charge from Round Up, Severe and Bun Fight. The last-named made a game attempt to get 4 up to Haut Monde, but the latter held her off. Legatee finished on solidly to geti third money, two lengths in front of Penelope. I

Widespread interest centred in the Duke of Gloucester Handicap, which was run shortly after the arrival of the Duke of Gloucester on the course. An excellent contest and close finish were staged. The big field got away on good terms, Sweet Agnes showing the way out of the straight, from Spiral, but when the back stretch was reached,' Manetho had taken charge from Southdown, Red Sun, Passion Fruit, Sweet Agnes, Cricket Bat, Illuminate and Vintage/ with Gold Trail last. Southdown joined Manetho rounding the far turn, and they led to the straight entrance from Red Sun, Passion Fruit, Cricket Bat, Solarium and Sweet Agnes, with Gold- Trail still bringing up the rear. Manetho gradudrifted out nearing the distance, and Southdown had charge with a furlong to go. Cricket Bat, Caliente, Vintage and Gay Marigold then became prominent, while Southdown had had enough. Cricket Bat and Caliente gradually drew away, with Vintage and Gay Marigold challenging. An exciting tussle ensued, Cricket Bat finishing stronger than Caliente, and he beat her by a neck. Gay Marigold was half a length back. a. neck in front of Vintage. Passion Fruit, Southdown, Solarium, Spiral, Rocket. Gold Trail and Might followed in that order.

Sporting Blood carried 160 tickets more than Synagogue in the Trentham Stakes. The four contestants moved off in line, but after a furlong had been covered Canopy went to the front and led to the home turn by two lengths from Sporting Blood and Synagogue, with a similar gap to Lady Kyra. Sporting Blood moved up to the leader rounding the turn into the straight, with Synagogue closely following. Sporting Blood had Canopy’s measure as soon as the run home was commenced, but the race had not progressed much further before Synagogue was in charge. There was then no doubt regarding the issue. Synagogue, with his rider not moving on him, going on to record a decisive win. Lady Kyra put in some solid work from the top of the straight, and had Sporting Blood beaten fifty yards from the post. Canopy was tailed off.

Golden Wings, Rebel Chief and Cranford had a close tussle for favouritism in the Bledisloe Stakes, but the first named’s supporters lost all interest by he being left standing at the post, after assisting in delaying the start. The early leaders were Cottesmore, Diatomous and Rebel Chief. Cottesmore was in charge entering the straight from Diatomous, Slippery, Hunting Lodge, Cranford and Gaysome, all running in close order. Cottesmore gave way to Diatomous passing the distance, and Cranford drew up to the latter, with Rebel Chief making a forward move. A close finish ensued, but Rebel Chief proved to be the best stayer and won well from Diatomous, who stayed on to beat Cranford. Princess Doreen was next, in front of Gaysome, Copyist, Autopay, Movie Star and Hunting Lodge. The Windsor Handicap was won easily by Cuddle, who took charge entering the home turn and led into the straight from Courtega, Wasteland and Arctic King. The finish was confined to these, Cuddle having three lengths to spare at the post from Courtega, who narrowly held off West Tor.
