CRAWFORD DEFEATS PERRY. [BT CABLE—TBEBB ASSN. —COPXBIGHI.J SYDNEY, December 2. Crawfoj.il rehabilitated himself in the eyes of the Australian tennis public yesterday when he defeated the world’s champion, Perry, after a gruelling five-set struggle. The N.S.W. chamiponship finals resulted as follow:— . Men's Singles: Crawford defeated Perry 7/5, 2/6, 6/3, 1/6. 7/5. Women’s Singles: Miss Round defeated Mrs Westmacott 6/2, 6/0. Men’s Doubles: Crawford and McGrath defeated Hopman and Maier 6/1, 6/4, 6/4. Women’s Doubles: Misses Dearman and Lyle defeated Miss Round and Mrs Hopman 6/4, 6/0. Mixed Doubles: Perry and Miss Round defeated Hopman and Mrs Hopmail 6/3, 6/4. Perry and Crawford both began steadily. Crawford led 5/2 in the first set, as the result of deep drives to Ferry’s backhand. Perry levelled the score to 5/5, but Crawford captured the set when Perrj’ lost his third service. Crawford made a. number of had errors in the second set. when Perry applied more pace. Crawford’s sliced shots to Perry's backhand worried the Englishman, and Crawford won the third set comfortably. Perry was most accurate in the loin th set. while Crawford was again erratic. A grand struggle came in the final set. Crawford captured Perry’s service lor a. 4/2 lead, but Perry retaliated and evened 4/4. He also led 5/4 with his own service to follow, which he lost, as the result of volleying errors. The tennis at this stage was of the highest order. Crawford’s baseline play was superior, and he won the set amid deafening cheering. Crawford won entirely on the merits of his backhand, which was formerly vulnerable, but in this case withstood Perry’s fiercest drives. Miss Round overwhelmed Mrs Westmacott. She did not allow the Queenslander to bring her devastating forehand into action. Miss Round carried far too much speed, and repeatedly left her opponent standing. Maier and Hopman provided an anti-climax, after their brilliant play on Friday. They were very patchy. Hopman also played badly in the mixed doubles final, in which Perry s and Miss Round’s individual brilliance won the day.
