DISTRICT COMPETITIONS. Üb-TTEp TAKES LEAD. Favoured with ideal weather conditions, the West Coast Cricket Association's competition matches were continued during the week-end. The United Club, which had, prior to yesterday’s games, shared the lead in points with Runanga. played a drawn game .with Marist - A, and took the lead. Runanga being defeated by Cobden A. Cobden B. defeated Marist 8., and Kumara easily accounted for Star. The positions of the live leading teams arc: United 10, Runanga 9, Cobden A. 8, Marist A. 7, Cobden B. 7.

UNITED AND MARIST A. Time saved Marist. A from, defeat at the hands of United, at the Recreation Ground yesterday, the honours being definitely with the latter team in a drawn match. The wicket favoured the batsmen, and of the six United men that were dismissed, Vincent (34) and Heasley (84). made good use of it, while Simmonds was unbeaten with his score at 40. United declared with the total at 233 lor six wickets. Mathews and Debenham were the best, of the Marist bowlers. With eight Marist wickets down for 162, stumps were drawn. COBDEN A DEFEAT RUNANGA. At Cobden yesterday, Runanga were defeated by Cobden A., in a match of one innings each. COBDEN B BEAT MARIST B. : At the Recreation , Ground No. 2, Ccbden B defeated. Marist B. in the first innings, yesterday. After a promising start, Marist collapsed before the bowling, and were all out for 78. Adams collictcd four wickets for three runs, and Coom 3 for 17. J. Morris, with 3L was the only batsman who reached double figures. Cobden had eight wickets down before the Marist total was passed, but a splendid last-wicket stand by Mcßain and Blake made Cobden’s position for a first innings secure, the total reaching 120. Cornish took six wickets for 37 runs, and L. Casey 3 for 22. A splendid knock by J. Morris, who scored 66 not out, in the second innings for Maiist, was the feature of the game. The annual Law v. Public Service match was played at the Recreation Ground on Saturday, and was won by the Public Service team by 10 runs. Public Service batted first and scoietl 132 (Smythe 37). McCarthy bowled well to take 7 wickets for 46. Law took a lead of 20 runs on the first innings, compiling 152 (McCarthy 20, IL Morgan, senr., 24. Meldrum -1). The wickets were shared by Smait, Simmers and Shannon (three each), and Elder (two). Public Service scored 157 in their second strike (Egglelon retired 41, Moonie retired 27 and Clarke not out. 23). McSorily and McCarthy again shared the wickets. Law failed by 10 runs to reach the Public Service total, scoring 127 in their second innings. THIRD GRADE COMPETITION. At the Recreation Ground on Saturday, Technical School third, grade team secured a three-point win over Cobden. Having first use of the wicket. Cobden made 78, Skeats supplying a well-played 52. The team provided only nine players. D. Knapp took six wickets at a cost, of 18 runs, the other two batsmen dismissed being run out. Technical School replied with 17(1 for the loss of five wickets, the scorers being Vaughan 46, Knapp (retired) 34. Peak 0, Baddeley 35, Davy not out 11. Lee 11, Crerar not out 7. Cobden made 55 for six wickets in the second innings, two of the team’s players in the first, innings being 'unavailable for the second. Crerar took three wickets without cost. Street (22) and tie Freatus (20) hatted attractively for Cobden. Technical School won by an innings and 37 runs. Marist third grade team could muster only five players against Camerons, at Camerons on Saturday. The. visiting few had to call on six Camerons players to field. The lesult w.as a. three-point, win for Camerons. Marist made 24.. Camerons replying with 83. Marist in the second innings made 102, Tindale (44), and Clancy (24) doing best. Camerons had lost one wicket for 49, at stumps.

HAWKE. CUP. MASTERTON, December 2. In the Hawke Cup elimination match Wairarapa’s first innings closed for 243. against. Manawatu’s 189. The latter in the second innings made 253, Cutler (91) and Penman (45) being the principal scorers. On account of the crumbling of the wicket, Wairarapa. batsmen fared badly in their second strike, two being injured. Montgomery received a nasty knock over the eye, requiring three stitches, from a ball off his bat, off Gallichan, and he had to retire, while Massey also got hit on the side. Norris, of Manawatu, when wicketkeeping, was knocked out by a ball behind the oar, and had to receive medical attention. At stumps Wairarapa had five wickets down for 75. The match was drawn, Wairarapa giving Manawatu the right to challenge.

QUEENSLAND V. S. AUSTRALIA. BRISBANE, December 2. In the Sheffield Shield match against South Australia yesterday, Queensland in the first innings made 374 for 7 wickets. J. Christy, a foimer South African, made 31: Bensted 59. D. Hansen 147, and R. Oxenham 60 not out.
