Sir Kingsley Wood, M.P., the Post-master-General, speaking recently at the opening of the new parcel post office at Liverpool—the second largest centre in the country—said the success of the inland parcel service afforded useful lessons even to-day. When the service was first proposed it had its opponents and critics, and many asserted that its establishment would retard the speedy delivery of the letter, and others that it would involve great loss of revenue. Last year . over 150,000,000 inland parcels were conveyed. by post in the United Kingdom, and of these 7,250,000 passed through Liverpool. Three and a half million parcels were despatched abroad from this country in 1933. Last year over 2,500,000 cash-on-delivery items were posted, and trade charges amounting to £2,388,000 were collected and duly remitted. The inland sample post, reintroduced in 1932, had proved to be of considerable advantage to trade and business, and 18,000,000 sample packets were sent by the inland post during the past financial year. The new “Railex” service was growing steadily. Already 14,000 licenses had been issued in respect of the business reply cards and evelope service. Speaking of the air parcel post, Sir Kingsley Wood said that in 1933 67 tons of parcels were despatched by air from this country, an increase of 10 tons over the previous year. There was every indication that there would be a further substantial advance this year.
