“SMITH FAMILY” PLANS. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, November 13. In August, the “Smith Family” sent to Education Boards and to controlling authorities of Roman Catholic schools, a questionnaire for distribution to the schools in which milk is distributed to children. ' . It appears from the replies received that in 67 schools, milk is supplied free to under-nourished children and relief workers’ children. In 23 schools,, the children pay from 4d to 6d a week for half a pint of milk daily. In the remaining schools, the cost is provided by charitable gifts. The cost per gallon of milk ranged from 6d a gallon to 1/3 a gallon. In 63 schools, pasteurised milk is supplied and in 27 schools milk is not pasteurised, the majority of the latter, however are supplied with milk from herds certified free from disease.

The “Smith Family” has called a meeting of representative citizens to consider a plan for supplying all children in the main centres with a daily ration. Mr Polson, president, of the Farmers’ Union, who has taken a keen interest in the matter will take the chain In October, a plan elaborated by the Milk Market Board for supplying milk to children in London came into force and it is hoped a similar plan here will allow every child in New Zealand getting the vitally necessary addition to his or her ordinary dietary.
