Governor Green, of Rhode Island State, informed an extraordinary session of the State Legislature, which has been summoned to deal with the strike emergency, that Rhode Island was faced, not with a textile strike, but with “a Communist uprising.” He asked for authority to call the Federal troops into the State, and for an appropriation of 200,000 dollars with which to enroll one thousand World War veterans as special State policemen. President Roosevelt had a telephonic conversation with Governor Green to-day, and the situation was outlined to the President, who thereafter said that he stood ready to order Federal troops ro intervene at a moment’s notice. Rioting throughout the night in the State had been general in several towns besides Saylesvillc, Woonsocket being particularly affected. One person was killed and several wounded. Shops were smashed and looted, and other property was destroyed. Governor Green this morning issued a general order to the police forces in the State to arrest and hold for examination every known Communist, for possible connection with riots throughout the Slate.
