SURPLUS WAR-GEAR

ANGLO-AMERICAN SALES. [BY CABLE —PRESS ARSN. —COPYRIGHT.] WASHINGTON, September 10. The United States Senate Committee on munitions to-day continued its investigations and it heard testimony in regard to the sale of war gear to many countries, including Japan, China, Turkey, Peru, Colombia and Cuba. About two hours were devoted to the probing of the affairs of Soley Limited, this concern being described as a “semi-official British Surplus Arms Corporation,” and also the affairs of its United States agent, the American Arms Corporation. The evidence indicated that ’ Soley Limited, has, or had, probably 30,000,000 dollars worth of surplus equipment that was out of date, for use in modern armies, but which was suitable for wars between, or revolutions in small countries. This equipment included thousand of Lewis guns, Hotchkiss guns, Vickers machine guns, colt pistols, light artillery and other weapons which were used in the recent hostilities in Manchuria and Gran Chacko war, and in threatened trouble in other parts of South America. Soley Limited did a large business, often calling on the American Arms Corporation to supplement its requirements from the American Government’s surplus stocks of equipment.
