JOURNALISTS’ PROTEST. | (Recd. September 12, noon.) I LONDON, September 11. The Institute of Journalists’ Conference passed a resolution, deploring newspapers engaging county and excounty cricketers, footballers, tennis players, and golfers to describe games, as it created the impression that sporting journalists were incompetent. It urged the Institute Council to draw the attention of the Marylebone Cricket Club, the Rugby Union, and other bodies, to the abuses of men posing as amateurs, and drawing higher pay from the sport that would he possible if they were professionals. MARIST CLUB REPORT.

Mr J. D. Cullen (President) will present the following report to the annual meeting of the Marist Brothers’ Old Boys’ Cricket Club, in the St. Columba Club rooms this evening: — “It is with much pleasure, on behalf of the Marist Cricket Club Executive, that I report a very successful season for the year ending March 31, 1934. The club won the Feary Cup, and were narrowly beaten in the Winsham Cup Competition, by United Club, while the Third Grade eleven won their competition. The club had eight members selected for representative matches, and five for third grade representative matches, which is very satisfactory indeed. It is considered that the coming season will be very successful, but the cooperation of all members is required in working for the club, and in bringing along new members.

“The club started last year with a debit balance of £ll/12/1, and it is with pleasure that I now inform you that, notwithstanding the considerable outlay on the purchase of new gear, we finished up with a credit balance of £l/14/2, which is a very satisfactory position. It is proposed during the coming season to run a B team, provided sufficient support is forthcoming. One thing your Committee wishes to impress on all players is the need for constant practice, not. spasmodic practice as was indulged in by some members last year. A point which should be considered seriously is the preparation of a practice pitch on the Recreation Ground, and I consider such a pitch would be of great advantage to the club. Your Committee wishes to thank all who so ably assisted the club last year, and. in this connection, it is considered special mention should be made of Rev. Father Holohan, Mr and Mrs Casey, and our capable and energetic secretary, Mr B. Rathbun. I would also refer to one of the greatest losses that cricket has suffered on the West Coast, viz., the death of Dr J. W. Mcßrearty. His genial, kindly criticism will be sadly missed during the coming season.’’
