SCULLING

PEARCE DEFEATS MILLER.

[BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYRIGHT.] (Recd. September 6, Noon). TORONTO, September 5. Pearce defeated Miller by fifteen lengths. Time 19min. 52sec. Conditions favoured Pearce at the start, having the protection of the seawall against the wind. He jumped to a short lead at the start. Miller caught him at 50 yards, and both held together. Miller, using a faster stroke from 28 to 30, gained a slight lead, but Pearce, never varying his 26 strokes, pulled even, and half way down the first leg commenced cutting out the lead, near the end of the first mile. Opening a two and a-half yards advantage, Pearce increased his stroke to 28 on the second leg, and seemed to be rowing well within himself. Miller also seemed strong, but - Pearce finished the second leg with a tremendous burst of speed, starting homeward with seven lengths advantage. Both made the second turn in five strokes, but Miller seemed well beaten, nearly 50 yards of open water separating them. From then on, Miller tired, Pearce increasing the lead with every stroke, winning with comparative ease by 15 lengths.
