• / POVERTY BAY V. AUCKLAND. [per press association.] GISBORNE, September 5. [ Auckland for the second successive time, suffered defeat at the hands of Poverty Bay to-day. The final score was 14 to 13 in favour of the homesters, but the Aucklanders, who meet Hawke’s Bay for the Ranfurly Shield on Saturday, were really outclassed, and a margin of ten points would have been a better indication of the play, the visitors being thoroughly beaten, back and forward. The match was played in drizzling rain, though the ground was in fair ( order. The opening score was a. penalty by Carrington (Poverty Bay), hut within a few minutes Heazlewood equalised similarly. For the remainder of the first half the play was fairly even, though the homesters narrowly missed scoring at least two tries. Early in the second half, B. Rogers dived across for a try, which Webb converted. Twice within the next five minutes, Poverty Bay narrowly missed scoring, but Pearce’s good dribble then sent the ball across for Hedgley to score, and Heazlewood converted. Thence onwards, the homesters were practically always: in Auckland’s 25, and only desperate tackling saved the visitors. Carrington’s splendid dribbling eventually sent Dennis across tor a try, but a simple kick was missed. Later Grant, following up, attempted a pot, but Kana secured the ball to dash over for another unconverted try wide out. During the last minute, following a good forward rush, Auckland hooked near the line, and Kedgley dashed across for a try which Heazlewood converted, making the final score: Poverty Bay 14; Auckland 13. OTAGO v. S. CANTERBURY. DUNEDIN, September 5. Otago defeated South Canterbury to-day by 22 points to 9. The game was played in ideal weather. For tire winners, Dunne (2)', MjcSkimming, Aronld, Allen and Anrocter scored, tries, Silver converting two. For the losers, Morrison and Black scored tries, and Black kicked a penalty goal. TEST REFEREE’S TRIBUTE. INVERCARGILL, September 5. Mr. Geddes, manager of the All Black team which recently toured Australia, has just received an interesting letter from Mr. L. K. Irving, who refereed the second test match. The letter is dated August 30, and states: “I want to convey to you my thanks for having given me the opportunity □f refereeing such a fine body of players and sportsmen. Their behaviour both on the field and off it, speaks volumes for the fine influence which you had on the members of the team. In a. fairly long record of refereeing international, inter-Dominion, and other first-qlass Rugby games, last Saturday’s test, will always live in my memory for the truly fine sporting spirit in which the players of each side played. lam sorry that time did not permit of a talk after the game. However, we may be able to discuss much by correspondence, and 1 will write you in this regard at a later date. Trusting you will visit Australia at some not too distant date, and again thanking you for having made it possible for me to have participated in such an enjoyable game.”
