COBDEN TOWN BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING. The Cobden Town Board's .monthly meeting was held 'last evening, there being present: Commissioners A. H. McKane (chairman), R. Ramage, F. AV. Baillie, F. J. Petherbridge, W. F. G. Pullin, and R. Marley. Accounts amounting to £3lB 6/1 were passed for payment. Three weeks’ leave of absence, without pay was granted the Board’s Inspector, Mr. R. L. Coleman. Crs. Ramage, Marley and Pullin were deputed to choose a man to relieve Mr Coleman, during his absence. In reply to a letter Mr J. Brails?r ford, it was decided to advise him that the Board could, not sanction the deeping of the drain outside his residence to 3ft. Gins, from 2ft.
G. Thomsen wrote' asking for the lease of Reserve 1117 for live years, for keeping pigs, stating that he would put in concrete styes, and would be prepared to pull down any buildings he might erect on the area, if the Board, at any time, wanted the land. —The matter was referred to the Chairman of the Works Committee, with power to act. Letters from Mrs A. Martin, regarding the frontage to her property (Section 61), E. McNeil, drain along Hall Street, and T. Clark, for spoil to assist with frontages, were referred to the Chairman of the Works Committee (Cr Pullin) with power to act. The acceptance of the newly-formed road in Sturge Street from M. 0. and A. 1 McNeil, was held over until the work is done to the satisfaction of the Works Committee.
The Chairman made reference to the death of Mr F. G. Davies, late Inspector of Factories at Greymouth, stating that he had always carried out his duties to the satisfaction of all, and had never turned down a reasonable request. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives, members standing in silence.
Mr C. K. Millar’s application for further use of a section owned by the Board, was granted until the end of the financial year, as requested. The Treasury advised payment to the Board’s fund account of 5/-, goldfields revenue.
In connection with the Merger Bill, a motion of thanks was passed to Messrs O’Brien and Webb, M’s.P., for their interest, and assistance. Mr A. W. Buzan, Mayoi* of Temuka, wrote urging the Board to support a conference of all local authorities, to be held in. Wellington before the end of the present session of Parliament, in an endeavour to formulate a national policy to get people back to remunerative employment. On the motion of the Chairman and Cr. Baillie, it was decided that Mr Buzan be advised of the Board’s position in connection with the merger, but stating that if Greymouth send a delegate, lie will be given the Board’s instructions.
Building permits, as follow, were referred to the Building Inspector for approval: A. G. Gunn, erection of shed, Bright Street, S. Martin, shifting smoke house, Mrs E. Marley, removing workshop, and erection of glass house and fowl house, J. Taylor, erection of residence, G. Manning, erection of wood and coal shed for Mrs Martin, Sotheran Ltd., erection of new operating theatre on Nurse O’Hara dwelling.
Following a report from , the Chairman of the Works Committee, it was decided to erect a notice board warning residents that anyone detected removing sand or spoil to the danger of the road at the corner of Clifford and Fox Streets, will be prosecuted. The Works Committee submitted the following report of work carried out during the month: —Cleaning up and gravelling footpaths in Sturge, Ward and Newcastle Streets; cleaning out drains and water tables in Bright, Hall and Clifford Streets, and part of Fox and Caldwell Streets; grading and filling in of potholes in Bright, Peel, Blackett, Clifford, Fox and Palmerston Streets, and Nelson Quay; putting in posts at the intersection of Cardwell and Bright Streets, to keep vehicles from cutting the corner. The drain pipes for the culvert were completed, and will be ready for lowering into position next week.
