SCHOOL CERTIFICATE
WIDESPREAD ACCEPTANCE. The extent to which the school certificate will be accepted by employing and qualifying authorities is already very encouraging, states the “Education Gazette.” The Public Service Commissioner, as the appointing authority for positions in the general Public Service and the General Post, Office, is prepared to accept the certificate as the equivalent of the university entrance examination for appointments to positions in which the appointees are not likely to study toward a university degree. The Railways Department is prepared to accept the certificate as a qualification for appointment in the service, subject to the usual powers of discretion in the selection of applicants for particular branches of the service. The New Zealand Bank Officers Guild will, for the purposes of the preliminary examination for the diploma in banking, accept a pass in the school certificate examination as an alternative to a pass in the university entrance examination, provided that the candidate’s pass subjects include at least three of the subjects history, geography, French, German, arithmetic, algebra and geometry, shorthand and typing and book-keeping. The Association of Accountants of Australia recognises the certificate in lieu of. the preliminary examination of the association in cases where the subjects passed include mathematics as well as English. The Australian Institute of Secretaries (New Zealand Division) has agreed to recognise the school certificate examination as a preliminary educational test. The examination also has the approval of the Association of Commercial Science of New Zealand.
