INGENIOUS THIEF
ROBBED WHILE CROWD LOOK ON. An inquisitive and sympathetic crowd had gathered in one of the main squares of Harbin, round a. man lying on the ground—presumably dead, says Reuter. Theh a young man elbowed his way through the people and, overcome with grief, fell on his knees beside the lifeless-body. “Oh, father,” he cried, “Why didn’t you listen to mother? She told you not to drink.” The crowd grew even more sympathetic. Then the young man felt in his father’s pockets, removed £lO, and
getting up, said lie was going to fetch a conveyance to take his father home. ' Some time later the “dead”'man sat up and looked around him. When he Was told that his son had taken his money and gone to fetch a carriage, the man said that he was a batchelor and had no children, but suffered from frequent heart attacks. The son is still missing—with the money.
