WRIGHT DEFEATS HAWES. [FEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, September 4. George Wright- (holder) defeated Percy. Hawes (challenger), on points, in a professional boxing contest here to-night, in which ' the New Zealand bantamweight championship was at stake. Wright .won very narrowly on points after a 15-rounds contest full of fierce exchanges at close and _ long range. Wright’s forcing tactics in the middle stages' carried the day. Hawes was. out on his feet at one stage, but he rallied, and more than held his own in the last four rounds. It. was announced that the contest was the last Wright will fight. v.-anUNGTON CHAMfIONS. WELLINGTON, September 4. The Wellington senior amateur championships, concluded at the Town Hall this evening. The champions are: — Paperweight: T. Dunn.Fly: L. Larsen. Bantam: B. F. Finnegan. Secretary of the Amateur Boxing and Wrestling Unions of Australia and Queensland, has been appointed as manager of the Australian amateur boxers to visit New Zealand in October. R. Aitken, an entrant in the bantamweight class, at the Wellington amateur boxing championships, was taken to the hospital last night, apparently suffering! from concession. It is stated that he is progressing favourably.
