He has been present at each Melbourne Cup race for the past fifty years. C.J.C. INCREASE STAKES. CHRISTCHURCH, September 4. The Canterbury Jockey Club, in accordance with the policy adopted last year, has increased stakes for the November meeting. The total of £9OOO given last year has been increased to £10,125, an increase of £1125, which includes an-advance of £275 in the New Zealand Cup stake, announced last month. There is now no race on the programme, worth less than £2OO. Hurdle races on the first and third days have been altered to brush hurdle races, and the conditions of the Suburban and Middleton Handicaps have been altered to make them open to horses that have Completed the course in three hurdle races oi’ steeplechases, and have not won a flat, race to the value of £2OO.

LIFE DISQUALIFICATION. AUCKLAND, September 4. Two disqualifications, one for life, were confirmed to-day by the Auckland District Racing Committee. The case arose ou,t of the entry of Star Lap for the Rotorua-Bay of Plenty Hunt Club’s meeting at Rotorua in July, by R. B. Mclntyre and M. C. L. A. Jensen, on the ground that McIntyre was ineligible under the Gaming Act, and that Jenson, in registering his interest in the horse, used an assumed name, contrary to the Rules of Racing. The Hunt Club decided that, for corrupt practice, Mclntyre should be disqualified for life, and Jenson for twelve months. The District Committee endorsed these disqualifications.
