MISS GAISFORD’S COURSE. RECORD [By CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.] SYDNEY, September 4. In the first qualifying round of the Women’s Australian Golf Championship to-day, Miss Gaisford (New Zealand) was out in 38, and looked like establishing startling figures, but she missed many putts for a tally of 41 home. However, her 79 was a new course record, which will enable her to lead the field. Miss Oliver Kay (New Zealand) and Miss McLeod (Victoria) each went round in 82. Miss Ebert, Miss Lascelles and Mrs McKay took 83; and Miss Wray and Miss J. Hammond 84. The course was heavy after the recent deluge, with many patches of water, which were against good scoring. There is a 36 holes stroke’ handicap event, called the Challenge Bowl, running in conjunction with the Australian Championship. Miss Gaisford, with 77, is running second, but Miss Kay is seven strokes behind the leader, Miss N. Murdoch, who is 76. The second qualifying round of the Championship, and also the Challenge Bowl event, will be played to-morrow. VICTORIAN AMATEURS. MELBOURNE, September 4. The. quarter finals of the Victorian Amateur Golf Championship to-day resulted: H. Williams beat Alex Rae (both left-handers), five and four; M. Ryan beat A. King, five and four; W. Edgar beat L. Hardie three and one; A. Jackson beat L. Quigley, five and four. “CENTENARY” VISITORS. LONDON, September 4. Cotton, the golfer, has definitely declined the Centenary Committee’s invitation to go to Australia, saying he cannot afford the time. Commander Roe, Secretary of the Professional Golfers’ Association, says one or two other British professionals may decide to go at the last minute, but nothing is settled.
