SOCCER FOOTBALL

ASSOCIATION MEETING. The weekly meeting of the management committee of the Westland Football Association was held last evening, there being present: Messrs W. Robertson (chairfman), E. Airey, E. Flood, J. B. Paton, F. M. Smyth, W. Rafferty (Referees’ delegate), and C. Restieaux (hon. secretary). A referee’s report was received as satisfactory from J. Scott, Waiuta. The Canterbury Football Association advised that the junior representative match for the Dewar Cup was being kept in mind, and that the Westland Association would be advised as soon as definite arrangements had been made. It was stated that lack of finance was the main consideration.

Mr Airey said it would be a pity if the competition were allowed to lapse on account of the inability of Canterbury to send a team to the Coast, as during the past two seasons the interprovincial games had been played at no expense to Canterbury, the Westland Association having footed the bill, first to bring a Canterbury side to Greymouth, and last year to send the Westland team to Christchurch. It was up to the Canterbury Association to make a strong endeavour to send a team to Greymouth this season.

It was decided to write to the Canterbury Association pointing out the facts cited by Mr Airey, and asking them to make an endeavour to send a team this year. The Marist Club (Wellington) wrote, stating that owing to the lateness of the season they were unable to accept the Westland Association’s invitation to visit the West Coast this year, but they would be pleased to consider an invitation for early in the 1935 season.—lt was decided to defer the matter, with a favourable recommendation to next year’s committee. After considerable discussion, the application of the Marist Club for the transfer of W. Timlin from Runanga Club to Marist and for his reclassifilation from senior to junior was. granted. Messrs Airey and Flood dissented, contending that the Association’s rule that no transfers be granted after August 1 should be adhered to. Other members pointed out that, Timlin was not playing tor any senior club, and it would be unfair to keep him out of the game altogether, also that he would be an assistance in building tin the Marist Club.

In accord with a request from the New Zealand Council it was decided to ask the Dobson Club to furnish details of travelling and accommodation expenses, in connection with the visit of the Club’s team to play in the Chathairi. Cup match at Christchurch

The Buller Football Association advised their inability to play the Emms Shield match on September 9 as suggested by Westland, owing to two teams being away from the district on that day, but suggesting September 16 as a suitable date. —It was decided to accept the suggested date, and also Mr J. Chippendale as referee.

Mr Smyth reported on the visit of two teams from the Otago Boys’ High School last week, thanking the Association for their donation, and also those residents whose generosity in billeting the boys had made the trip possible. The visit had proved a success from all points of view, and the games, which produced an improved standard of football, had been played in a splendid sporting spirit.— Mr Smyth was thanked for his report, and for the work he had done in fostering the game in the school.
