[BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —OOPYBIGHT,] DETECTIVE’S SUICIDE. SYDNEY, September 3. The Coroner to-day returned a verdict of suicide, owing to mental depression and ill-health, in the case of Thomas Malone, aged 67, the Australian Jockey Club’s chief detective whose fall from a window occurred on August 29. IRONWORKS DISPUTE. SYDNEY, September 3. Describing the stoppage of work at Lysaght’s factory, Newcastle, as a breach of an undertaking by the employees that work would continue uninterruptedly, Mr Justice Cantor, of the Industrial Commission, to-day rescinded the award which is applicable to the ironworkers’ section of Lysaght’s. Counsel for Lysaght’s stated that the strike meant that huge consignments of galvanised iron would have to be brought from England to enable Lysaght’s to keep faith with their customers, owing to there being exceptionally heavy demands on the local mills. NEW ZEALAND ARTISTS. SYDNEY, September 3.

An exhibition of water-colour drawings by two New Zealand artists, Mrs H. Pulleine-Spencer and Mrs Dorothy Ashton, was opened to-day at the New Zealand Women’s Association’s rooms. The majority of the subjects are NewZealand. Critics declare Mrs Spencer’s work is fresh and happy. Her best results are achieved in pictures of the luxuriantly tangled native New Zealand bush, marked by depth and richness of colour. Mrs Ashton’s comprise pleasing beach scenes. Will Ashton, who opened the exhibition, said the work of each painter was frank and honest, full of light and colour.
