SUNKEN CRUISER

SCAPA FLOW SALVAGE. [TIMES CABLES.] LONDON, September 3. A great salvage feat was achieved at Scapa Flow when the German battle cruiser “Bayern,” of 28,000 tons, was raised twenty fathoms in twenty seconds. In nine months of arduous preparation, the Bayern had presented unusual difficulties. She was upside down, necessitating the fitting of seven airlocks of unprecedented length. Numerous disappointments preceded the success. The Bayern was actually brought to the .surface a fortnight ago, but she was then listing so dangerously that salvors were compelled to sink her again. She is to be broken up.

MONT ST. QUENTIN. AMIENS, September 2. On the anniversary of the recapture of Mont Saint Quentin, Major Beauvais presided at a commemoration ceremony, laying two wreaths on the monument of the French and the Australian soldiers. After the service, the Major, in a Short address, read General Rosenthal’s letter of thanks for a flag which the French Commune had presented to the Second Australian Division.
