ENGLAND’S GOOD START RAIN LIMITS PLAY [BY CABLE —PRESS ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.J (Recd. September 4, 10 a.m.) LONDON, September 3. The match between Australia and an eleven of England commenced at three o’clock. The wicket was easy aftei’ rain, consequently Chapman, on winning the toss, elected to bat. Hobbs and Walters by delightful play raised 52 in 40 minutes, when Fleetwood-Smith, who more than once troubled Walters, bowled him. The same bowler continued to trouble both Hobbs and Woolley. The former was out on attempting to drive a good length ball. He batted 110 minutes. The score was 2 for 111. Woolley found form and notched 50 in 70 minutes, after whfch he and Hammond raised 150 in 140 minutes. Then Woolley was clean-bowled. He had batted 95 minutes and hit nine fours. Three for 150. Hammond and Ames continued steadily until stumps. Scores: — ENGLAND XI. —First Innings.
