GREY RIVER HOSPITAL
SENIOR SURGEON APPOINTED. When the appointments of the medical superintendent and senior surgeon were made at the recent meeting of the Grey Hospital Board, some doubt was expressed as .to whether Dr. Hamilton, of Christchurch, who received the appointment of senior surgeon, would ,be taking up the position, and it was decided that, if such happened to be the case, the applicant receiving the next highest vote should be offered the position. Dr. Hamilton having declined the appointment, it has now been offered to Dr. H. C. Barrett, at present surgeon of the Waikato Hospital. Dr. Barrett, M. 8., Ch.B., F.R.C.S. (England), holder of the Batchelor Memorial Medal in obstetrics and gynaecology, qualified at the Otago University, where, after qualification, he was appointed to the' position of demonstrator in anatomy. Following two and a-half years as resident surgeon at Waikato, he left for England. Mis first appointment there was the position of senior resident surgeon at Bedford County Hospital, where he later took charge of the eye, ear, nose, and throat department. Further appointments in England included resident doctor in charge of the urological beds at West London Hospital, and fractures and orthopaedic beds at Bethnal Green, and Bedford County Hospital. Following a post-graduate course in urology, and the treatment by surgery of diseases of the kidneys, etc., he was appointed to the position of surgeon-registrar at Waikato Hospital, in April, this year. It is expected that Dr. Barrett will take up duties at the Grey Hospital, about the middle of September.
