MR GEDDES’ DISCLAIMER. (BY CABLE —PBEBB ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.] SYDNEY, September 3. The Secretary of the New South Wales Rugby Union, has received a cablegram from Mr Geddes, manager of the All Blacks, as follows: “Regret! gross misrepresentation of remarks re-1 garding referees. No slight intended. Nobody has anything but praise for the whole tour.” CLIFF PORTER’S ESTIMATE. WELLINGTON, September 3. “I say definitely there was absolutely no call for it,” said the ex-All Black captain, C. G. Porter, who arrived by the R.M.S. Makura from Sydney to-day, referring to the complaints of some members of the All Blacks’ party about Australian referees. Porter confirmed his remarks made in an interview with the Sydney “Daily Telegraph” last week. “■When a team won squealing it was bad enough,” he said, “but when it lost it was worse.” While Irving may have been too technical in his rulings he was the same to both teams. I did not see any partiality on either side, and I congratulated the referee afterwards on his fine display.”
MAX NOT IN SHIELD TEAM. NELSON, September 4. Considerable surprise is expressed at the non-inclusion of D. Max, the All Black, in Nelson’s Seddon Shield team to meet Marlborough on Saturday. The selector, E. Snow, says the present pack, which is on tour in the South, is working together so well that it would be unwise to break the existing combination.
