PARLIAMENTARY TERM
PETITION PRESENTED. [PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, September 1. A petition has been forwarded to the Governor-General, bearing the signatures, it is stated, of 54,000 electors, and praying Lord Bledisloe to dissolve the present Parliament at the end of the 1934 session on the ground that Parliament without a mandate from the electors has legislated to extend its term of office for a further period than that for which it. was elected. A covering letter with the petition requests that, if in the opinion of his Excellency there be any doubt as to the rights of the people to demand that Parliament be dissolved at the end of the present session, the petitioners be granted the right of appeal to his Majesty the King in person. The letter adds: “We understand that this is the first time on record in the history of the Dominion that such an appeal has been made to the GovernorGeneral, and the course adopted has been taken only after very careful consideration.”
