HOKITIKA NOTES

(our own correspondent.] HOKITIKA, September 3. An exceptionally severe hailstorm passed over Hokitika on Saturday night, shortly before 11 o’clock, filling gutters of houses to over-flowing. In some places the ground was covered some inches. Early potatoes suffered badly. The funeral of the late Mrs Nancekivell, of Woodstock, held yesterday afternoon, was attended by friends from all parts of the district, and many floral tokens of sympathy were sent. The Westland Rugby representatives which went South on Saturday, met defeat at. the hands of the southern team at Hari Hari, by 5 to 3. The junior team which journeyed to Westport also met defeat, Westport winning by 10 to 6. The team returned to Hokitika last night. Mr. F. Holmes and Mr. Ben Thiem are .patients in the Westland Hospital. Mr. and Mrs R. Lynn left 'by their car yesterday, on an extended tour of the North Island. *
