CHILD CRIPPLE CURED
SOCKET MADE FROM OWN BONE | A little girl who, five years ago, seemed likely to be a cripple for life is to-day running about and playing with other children, thanks to an operation performed at Victoria Hospital for Children, Chelsea, London. Tlie child, Gwen Jenkins, of Brook-mead-road, Beddington-lane, West Croydon, was born without a socket to one of her hips. She was taken to the hospital nearly six years ago, when she was 16 months old, and for Paris 7631 ' 8 llad the hipS in plaster of Then the surgeons took a piece of bone from her other hip, and this, being made into a. socket, was placed in the crippled hip, which was again placed m plaster. For two years the plaster remained, until in May the doctors found that the socket worked naturally, though it was not strong enough. A daily course of exercise and massage was begun, and subsequently the child was placed on the floor and, after a little hesitation, began to walk.
