GOLD PRICE RISING

CITY REMAINS CALM. [official wireless.] RUGBY, September 1. A further advance of 5Jd in the price of gold to a new high record of 141/5 took place to-day, the increase on yesterday’s price being based on supply and demand and including the premium of 2/4 over the dollar at 4.99 7-S and sevenpence over the franc at 74.23/32. Sterling was slightly firmer on most of the principal centres to-day. The downward movement in the past few days caused no anxiety in city financial circles, where there is a. confident belief it was manly due to “bear” sales, and that the covering of such operations will shortly produce recovery in rates. It is realised that no change has accurred in the conomic situation of the country to warrant depreciation.
