MUSSOLINI SEEKS HELP
OVERTURES TO SOCIALISTS [BY CABLE —PBEBB ASSN. —OOPYBIGHT.] LONDON, September 1. The “Daily Telegraph’s” Milan correspondent states: Signor Mussolini has approached some prominent survivors of the Italian Socialist Party, which he suppressed, with the suggestion that they should join him in order to form a new Socialist wing for the Fascist Party. In, return, they would receive a number of important posts in the Party, especially in the administrative departments of the Italian Corporative State, which controls all labour and output of Italy. The correspondent adds: “The explanation of the Duce’s latest move is that the Corporative State has now assumed unweildy proportions, and must be worked with collaborators whom Labour trusts. Secondly, an increase in unemployment in Italy and a dwindling of exports make fresh wage cuts and labour restrictions imperative.” The Rome correspondent of the “News-Chronicle” states: Mussolini is reported to be seeking collaboration with several former leaders of the Socialist Party, which he suppressed, when he seized power. Their collaboration, it is stated, is needed for the functioning of the Corporative State, under which all labour and the output of industry will be controlled. The Socialists approached include Signor Caldara, who was a friend of Signor Mussolini in his Socialist days, who will be given Cabinet rank if he is persuaded to enter into the Fascist ranks. He has been given three months to think things over.
