AVIATION

CANADIAN EXPLORATION. [BY CABLE-PRESS ASSN. —COPYBIGHT.] OTTAWA, August 30. Fatigued, but gratified at reaching his goal, John Grierson, who set out from Rochester, in England, on July 20, to conduct a possible air route survey flight to Canada, via the northern route, reached Ottawa today. The last stage of his flight from James Bay occupied five and threequarter hours. He used a Gipsy Moth and he said that the flight was undertaken entirely on his own. SMITH’S NEW RECORD. (Recd. September 1, 8 a.m.) SYDNEY, August 31. Creating a fresh record, Kingsford Smith flew his new plane from Melbourne to Sydney in two hours eleven minutes. Smith states that if through inability to obtain a certificate of airworthiness, he is unable to enter the Centenary race, he will sell the machine, but first will seek permission to fly it in Australia for demonstration purposes, probably attempting some rrans-Australian records.
