SOCCER FOOTBALL

SECONDARY SCHOOL MATCHES. The annual meeting of the Greymouth Technical School Soccer teams and the Otago Boys’ High School teams, took place yesterday afternoon, two matches being played at the , Technical School grounds. The field' was in a heavy state, but conditions* overhead were ideal. Both matches were played at a fast pace, the Greymouth team winning the junior game by one goal to nil, and the senior match being drawn, with two goals to each side. The standard of play was good, and there was a large attendance to witness what proved to be interesting and cleverly exploited football.

SENIOR MATCH. The teams for the senior match were: — Otago: Nixon; Gregory, Rose; McLean, Evans, McGilliray, Hooper, Mutimer, Clarkson, Boyd, Douglas. Technical: Knapp; Lee, Baddeley; McFadyen, East, McDougall; Davy, Dargan, Vaughan, Judkins, Pattinson. After winning the toss, Technical moved to attack quickly, and when within striking distance, East sent in a long shot, which was neatly cleared by Nixon. Otago then went up to the Technical end, but did not hold their advantage for long, Tech, returning play to the opposing territory, whole several corners took place. Dargan then placed by, and brought relief to Otago, who set out on attack, and Knapp had to concede a corner. Douglas placed behind, and then Otago moved off at the left flank and crossed well for Hooper to cleverly send past Knapp. Otago 1, Technical 0. Technical forced the pace, and Otago had to defend stoutly. Dargan had a shot Which struck the bar, but then rebounded into play. Otago were attacking strongly at the interval, just prior to which a corner to them resulted in Clarkson finding the net. Otago 2, Technical 0. In the early stages of the second spell Otago attacked and had Technical hard pressed for several minutes. Dargan eventually sent Vaughan away, and the latter returned the ball to Dargan, but McLean ran in to clear for a corner. Vaughan at this stage went back to centre half, and an improvement in the play of Technical was immediately noticeable. Dargan sent a good drive just past, then Technical returned to attack, and from fast work in front, East opened the home team's score. Technical 1, Otago 2. Encouraged by their success Technical continued, the attack, first Vaughan and then Dargan going very close to scoring. Later Pattinson equalised the scores with a fast shot to the net, and full-time arrived shortly after, with the scores Otago 2, Technical 2. JUNIOR MATCH. I The players in the junior grads match were: — Otago (blue and white): Walker, Miller, Gardiner, Herron, Stronach, Stewart, Young, Lamb, Foote, McDermott and Taylor. Technical (blue and gold): Knapp, Ellis, Airey, Airns, Mclntyre, Tyson :

Airey, Hassan, Kaye, Roberts, Sharman. Otago were first to attack, and play continued at a fast pace for several minutes, and see-sawed from one end of the field to the other. The defence of both teams proved solid. Each side secured a corner, but did not turn »t to profit. Hassan then sent in a fast one, but Walker proved equal to the test, and cleared. Later Roberts tested Walker twice, and the Otago keeper was applauded for splendid saves. Then Foote became prominent in smart work, during which he beat two defenders only to shoot past. Otago continued with the attack and, McDermott placed one over the bar, when in a. good position. The interval arrived without a score. In the second half Foote early tested Knapp, who did well to clear. The Technical attacked, and Roberts, from well out scored with a splendid shot. Technical 1, Otago 0. From the kick-off Otago endeavoured to equalise, and gave the defence a worrying time, but they could not score, Knapp playing a grand game at the net. Full-time arrived with the score, Technical 1, Otago 0. The teams were later entertained at Herb Moore’s tearooms, and at the picture theatre. The Otago boys, under control of Mr G. Mclnnes, left this morning on return to Dunedin.
