CYCLING

N.I. ROAD CHAMPIONSHIP. [PER press association.] HAWERA, -August 29. The North Island road cycle championship, over a 62 miles course, at Hawera, to-day, was won by C. Hawkins (New Plymouth), who finished fifth, with the fastest time of 2 hours 50 minutes and 15 seconds. The first ten placings and times were: M. Green, Hawera (18£min.) 2 hours 58 mins. 48secs; J. Ludham, Stratford (24mins.), 3 hours 4mins. 23secs; N, Hyde, Palmerston North (16£mins) 2 hours 57mins 14secs; R. Reed, New Plymouth (12Jmins.), 2 hours 54mins 43secs; C. Hawkins, New Plymouth Smins), 2 hours 50mins 15secs; L. Sowerby, Wellington (Bmin.), 2 hours 50min. 17secs; F. Franklyn, Pahiatua (15Jmins), 2 hours- 57mins 50secs; M. Hanley, Napier (12imins), 2 hours 54 mins 55secs; T. Nixon, Auckland (lOmins), 2 hours 52min 26secs; N. Batten, New Plymouth (lllmins), 2 hours 53mins. 57secs. The scratch men conceded 18 minutes' to the winner, and finished 12 minutes behind him. The race was run in ideal weather conditions over tar-sealed roads. Of sixty competitors forty-three finished. Trophies to the value of £llO were given, the value of the first prize being £45.
