Kingsford Smith says that he has sent dozens of cablegrams to Washington, in a fruitless - endeavour to accelerate the arrival of particulars of airworthiness. “Time is running short, and it will be necessary for me to leave within a fortnight or so, if I am to compete in the race. If the certificate does not arrive from America, I will be unable to compete.” AWAITING TECHNICAL DATA (Recd. August 30, 1 p.m.) WASHINGTON, August 29. The Air Commeroe Bureau of the Department of Commerce, to-day, told the Australian Press Assn. “No certification has yet been issued for Kingsford Smith’s Lockheed. We can give no assurance regarding certification until we have received and investigated the technical data pertaining to this aeroplane. We understand that the Lockheed is now preparing the necessary data.” . INDIA’S FACILITIES. (Received August 30, 9.30 a.m.) CALCUTTA, August 2s. Among the important developments in civil aviation in India, will be the provision of night flying on the Cal-cutta-Karadhi route. There will be beacons at intervals of a hundred miles. Most of the landing grounds will have boundary lights, and illuminated wind indicators. Pilots will always have one beacon and often two in view, when flying at night. The main aerodromes will be fully equipped with flood lighting. Projected improvements include new aerodromes, larger hangars at Calcutta, Chittagong, and Rangoon, and also meteorological observatories. JEAN BATTEN. TE AROHA, August 29. In perfect weather, with a. large assemblage. Miss Jean Batten arrived at Waihou from Whakatane, accompanied by Auckland ’planes, this afternoon. A civic reception was accorded, the Mayor and County Chairman extending a. hearty welcome. The aviatrix expresesd pleasure at visiting Te Arolia. A pageant programme was carried out by the local club, and there is a grand ball in honour of Miss Batten to-night.
