TERRITORY FOR AGA KHAN

RULER WITH NO LAND. LONDON, July 19. A suggestion alleged to have emanated from the Aga Khan that he be granted an area of Indian territory to rule over, in consideration of his past services to the Empire, was the subject of a question in the Indian Legislative Assembly yesterday. The Foreign Secretary of the Indian Government replied that he had received a communication from the Aga Khan, but the contents were confidential. The Aga Khan is the head of the Ismaili Community of Moslems, and, although he is the leader of 78,000,000 people in India, he has no hereditary territory. He is also the religious head of millions of Moslems throughout Central Asia and East Africa. The Aga Khan claims descent from Ali, son-in-law of the Prophet Mohammed. He is the forty-second in descent from Ismail, son of the sixth Imam of the Shlal branch of Islam. As hereditary Imam he receives contributions from his far-spread subjects, and this money is distributed for the benefit of his people. He is a man of wide interests, ranging from racing to finance and Empire problems.
