REEFTON NOTES

[OHB OWN COBRESPONDENT.] REEFTON, August 30. The sixty-second anniversary of the founding of the Wesley Methodist Church at Reefton was celebrated by an anniversary social in the schoolroom on Tuesday. The hall was filled to capacity. Rev. A. P. Duncan presided. The programme comprised the following numbers: —Piano solo, Rona Potter; infants’ song, “Down Came the Rain Drops”; vpcal duet, Thelma Pearce; and Moira Honey; violin isolos, May Wright; musical monologues, Rev. A. P. Duncan; mouthorgan solos, Mr S. Fairest; vocal solo, Mrs Kearns; vocal solo, Mr W. Baird; instrumental quartette, Messrs W. and G. Baird, W. Sara and L. Robinson; vocal solos, Mrs Honey; Miss D. Leggoe; duet, Messrs W. Baird and W. Parsonage; recitation, Mts W. Parsonage. Three anthems were sung by the Junior’ Choir, and one by the Choir. Rev. W. F. Evans, of Knox Church, and Captain Rankin, of the Salvation Army, congratulated the Church on its anniversary. The monthly meeting of the Reefton branch of the Women’s Institute was held on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs McElwee reported as delegate to the Dominion Conference at Wellington. Mrs McElwe_e tendered her resignation as secretary, and this was received with regret. Mrs Hampson was appointed secretary and Mrs Finlay treasurer. Mrs Wicken and Miss Burns tied for first place in the picture competition, with Mrs Rollerson as second. Mrs J. Osbourne wasi accorded a hearty vote of thanks for the use of her shop for the Institute cake day. Miss Arnott gave an interesting demonstration of seagrass work, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, as was Mr S. Fairest for his exhibition of pictures. A donation of 24/- from the Cronadun branch of the Institute towards the Rest was gratefully acknowledged, and it was resolved that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded Cronadun for their gift. Mesd'ames Duff, Discaciati, Cochrane, and Findlay were hostesses for afternoon tea.

The monthly meeting of the Reefton Musical Society was held in the Parish Hall last evening. Rev. Father Seymour occupied the chair. It was resolved that the Society’s entertainment for the Dental Clinic be staged at an early date. A short programme was provided by the Glee Circle, who sang four glees, Mrs Sharpe two solos, Mr W. Baird two solos, Mr Cooke two solos, Father Seymour two solos.

Mr H. Prescott, of Greymouth, accompanied Jby Miss Vonnie Miller, A.T.C.L., visited the Society, and Mr Prescott delivered an interesting lecturette on “Music and the Art of Singing,” and illustrated his lecture with a series of songs. There was a good attendance, including a number of visitors, and all greatly appreciated Mr Prescott’s lecture. The vocalist delighted the gathering with his numbers, which included “Every Valley Shall Be Exalted,” “On With the Motley,” “Onaway, Awake, Beloved,” “Once Again,” “Mignon.” At the con- • elusion Mr Prescott was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, anil the opportunity was also taken to thank Miss Miller, the accompanist, for her work, and the hope was expressed that Mr Prescott would visit the Society again. During the course of the evening the President bid farewell to Miss Magee and Dr. Marshall, who are both shortly leaving Reefton, and wished them good luck. Dr. Marshall suitably replied;
