PRESBYTERIAN DOCTRINES

AN INQUIRY SUGGESTED. [PIB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, August 28. The Presbyterian Synod of Otago and Southland met to-day. The Rev. A. G. Gardiner, of South Invercargill, was elected Moderator. . Rev. P. B. Fraser wrote stating that if the Synod refused a candid inquiry as to the teaching at Knox College relative to the written standards of the Synod and the Church, there would be an appeal to the Civil Court for a writ of mandamus to institute such an inquiry. In his letter, Mr. Fraser drew attention to the teaching in Professor Dickie’s book, which he claimed substituted a confused and artificial theology not based on the Scriptures. He referred also to the teaching of Professor Hunter as indicated by the prescribed text book, which exhibited the principles and methods of modernist, sceptical scholars in an excessive degree. Professor J. Cumming said that it would be improper to take notice of this letter. If anyone wanted to bring up such matters against a professor he should do it in the way that the Book of Order prescribed. Rev: J. O. Smith said that Mr. Fraser should stop coming to the Courts of the Church in an irregular manner and making charges of this character against the honour of their teachers. The Synod declined unanimously to receive the letter.
