ANNUAL CONFERENCE. [PEE peess association.] TIMARU, August 28. The first annual conference of the Dominion Federation of School Committees’ Associations opened to-day. Mr J. AV. Preen, of Timaru, the President, referred to good progress having been made in the first year, and said that, as a result of views put before the Minister, he had seen ’lt to make substantial grants to Education Boards for the maintenance of school buildings. The delegates during the afternoon were accorded a civic reception. The Conference passed a South Taranaki ;remit as (follow's: —/‘That in view of changes in the Federation headquarters, a strong, vigilant advisory committee be maintained in Wellington to act in conjunction with the Dominion Executive.” The Conference strongly opposed the further establishment of the intermediate schools, it being considered that pressing need of primary schools should first be satisfied. The Conference agreed to a Wellington remit urging the amendment of tho staffing regulations and the reclassification of teachers to receive promotion 'in their own schools, without the necessity of transfer. It also was decided to make an urgent appeal to the Minister of Health for travelling dental clinic services for the country districts. After discussion, the following remit was carried unanimously:—“That in view of the expressions of opinion obtained at the recent meetings of householders throughout New Zealand favouring restoration of the optional admission of children at live years of age to State primary schools, the Minister be urged to repeal this legislation at the earliest opportunity.
