OVER THE MILE
AN INTERESTING TABLE ) Interesting facts are revealed in a table published in an Italian athletic journal and received by Mr. L. A. Tracy, secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, dealing with record performances fox’ the one • mile. The athletes whose achievei ments are examined, together with the year and the place at which they were registered, are Paavo Nurmi (Finland) 1924, at Stockholm; Jules Ladoumegue (France), 1931, at Paris; Jack Lovelock (New Zealand), 1933, at Princeton (U.S.A.); and Glen Cunningham (U.S.A.) 1934, at Princeton. The table is as follows: — Nurmi: First quarter 58 3-5 sec., second quarter 63 1-5- sec., third quarter 64 9-lOsec., last quarter 63 7-10 sec.; full distance, 4 min. 10 2-5 sec. Ladoumegue: First quarter 60 4-5 sec., second quarter 63 2-5 sec., third quarter 63 4-5 sec., final quarter 61 1-5 sec.; full distance, 4 min 9 1-5 sec. Love'lock: First quarter 61 2-5 sec., second quarter 62 l-ssec., third quarter 65 1-10 sec., final quarter 58 9-10 sec.; full distance, 4min. 7 315 sec. Cunningham: First quarter 61 4-5 sec., second quarter 64 sec., third quarter 61 4-5 sec., final quarter 59 1-10 sec.; full distance, 4min. 6 7-10 sec. As the table shows, each one of the three performances since Nurmi ran his 4min. 10 2-5 sec. at Stockholm is ( better than the previous best. Cunning- - ham’s run, which, if passed, will supplant Lovelock’s time, was registered J quite recently. A careful examination of the table reveals a fast first quarter by Nurmi, the regularity of timing I by Ladoumegue, a fast third lap by I Cunningham, and the speedy final lap by Lovelock.
