Forbes, J. Forbes. GOLF. (Recd. August 29, 10 a.m.) HAWTHORNE (N.J.), August 28. George Jacobus, President of the American Professional Golfers’ Association, interviewed by the Australian Press Association, emphatically denied the reports that no American golfers definitely decided to participate in the Centenary championship. He said the team would positively be sent. Five, including Paul Runyan, were definitely selected, and the sixth would be named within a week, by which time, the list would be published. Jacobus added that he was authorised and had already made tentative bookings for the team to sail from San Pedro in the Mariposa on October 17. He said he understood that Sarazen was unable to make the trip, due to professional engagements in America. Kirkwood was not selected by the Golf Association Committee, and whether he would make the trip on his individual initiative was not known, but it was thought unlikely. Olin Dutra, the open champion, was invited, but he was unable to participate, owing to physical ailments suffered at the time he won the championship. Jacobus asked the Australian Press Association to quote him as saying that the team selected would be exceptionally strong.

SOCCER. CHRISTCHURCH, August 29. The Canterbury Soccer side to play Auckland at Auckland on Saturday for the English trophy is as follows: W. B. Mitchell, J. Tiechert, F. Craggs, G. Smith, M. Gordon, W. Wilson, W. Thomas, S. Cawtheray, W. Ives, A. McMillan, and G. Ellis. CYCLING WELLINGTON, August 29. The Australian cyclist, Opperman is a passenger by the Rangitata, and joins the Wanganella, to-morrow, for Australia to which he is returning with his wife after a visit to England and the Continent. He takes part in the Centenary Race at Melbourne. While in England he broke five records three of them from Land’s End to John o’ Groats. He expresses great admiration for French riders, and the wonderful manner in which cycling is appreciated in France. HAWERA, August 29. Sixty-three riders left the mark this afternoon on the circular 60-mile cycle road race for the North Island Championship. The limit men left at one o’clock, and the scratch men at 1.30. There is ideal weather, and on the tarsealed roads fast times are anticipated. LOVELOCK’S SUPREMACY. LONDON, August 28. A. E. Porritt, in the “Evening News,’’ says: Lovelock still stands supreme among the world’s athletes, despite criticism and much ill-health. He has undeterredly shown us how perfect the mile can be. It is cheering to think that he will remain in Britain at least “ u.ntil the Berlin Olympic Games.
