WEEK-END ACCIDENTS
TWO KILLED AT CROSSING CAR AND TRAIN COLLIDE [PKB PBUSS ASSOCIATION,J WANGANUI, August 12. 1 The 9.10 a.m. mixed train, which left Ohakune for Raetihi on Saturday, struck a motor car on the Rochfort crossing, within the borough, and, as a result, two men lost their lives, and a young lady passenger was seriously injured. The dead are: Frank Milton Carroll, aged about 50 years, married; John Russell Cunningham, aged about 30 years, married. Lillian Carroll, daughter of the first mentioned, who is now an inmate of the Raetihi Hospital, was seriously
injured. The car, which is believed to have been driven by Mr. Carroll., was proceeding along the Main South Road towards Taihape, having left Manunui in the morning round about seven -o'clock. The train struck it at about a point level with the driver’s seat, and carried it some chains to a cattlestop, where it was crushed. x . Carroll received' severe head injuries and he died within a few minutes of the impact. Cunningham also received heaxl injuries, and one of his legs was badly lacerated. He died on the way to the Raetihi Hospital. The "irl is suffering from a severe wound on one thigh, and is badly bruised on both legs from the hips down. She was removed to, Raetihi Hospital, where her condition is still critical. The crossing is fairly open, and it is believed that the sidescreens interfered with the driver’s vision. The car was badly damaged. The train was promptly brought to a standstill, and conveyed the injured to Raetihi. All the victims belong to near Taumarunui.
CYCLIST KILLED.
AUCKLAND, August 12.
Thrown against the windscreen of a motor car as the result of a collision at Mount Roskill yesterday, a cyclist, George Kent Tucker, aged IS, a poultry farm employee, of Ellerslie, suffered injuries which resulted in his death in the hospital later. Tucker s cycle struck the mudguard of the car, and he was thrown against the windscreen, receiving severe cuts about tlie neck When the accident occurred Tucker was on his way home to have, lunch before proceeding to Remuera for the afternoon to take up his duties as an ambulance officer at the hockey grounds.
FOOTBALLER KILLED.
WANGANUI, August 12.
Stanley johnston, aged 23, died at Taihape Hospital last night from concussion, received while playing football at Mangaweka. He was accidentally kicked on the side of the head. Both his parents are dead, and it is understood that his step-fauio-resides at Auckland.
BOY’S LOST EYE.
WELLINGTON, August 13.
Leslie Wallace, 11, of Korokoro, lost an eye through being hit by a golf ball, on the Petone Recreation Ground, in Saturday. He was playing with a ball, when a hockey team took the field, and one of the players struck the ball with a stick, the ball rising and striking the boy on the eye, which was removed after his admittance to hospital.
DRIVER FATALLY INJURED.
AUCKLAND, August 13.
Andrew Jack, 44, mechanic, died in the hospital last night, of injuries received when driving a truck which collided with a motor car in a suburb on Saturday evening. Both vehicles were badly damaged. EIGHT AMERICANS KILLED. (Received August 13, 10 a.m.) VANCOUVER, August 12. William Dotson, a one-handed bus driver, and seven -passengers in his vehicle, were killed when a train ran it down outside Memphis, Tennessee.
