WELLINGTON, July 12.
The Council of the New Zealand Tobacconists’ Association decided as from to-morrow, to increase the price of cigarette papers, both imported and New Zealand made. Lines which formerly sold at 2d a packet are advanced to 3£d and 4d a packet. Double packets will sell at 7d. Lines which formerly cost Id a packet will now be 3d. The Council is negotiating with agents with a view to obtaining permanent fixation, and this should materialise early next week. This may have the effect of altering the price of 31d lines to 4d. New Zealand made papers, which formerly sold at Id will now be 3d a packet, and 2d packets will be 4d.
Tobacco prices have already been fixed under the minimum' list which according to the President of the Association is working smoothly. • The new duties on cigarettes will not be operative until November 1 next, and it is not anticipated there will be any fixation of prices until then.
